Glossing wind names in Low German in Salisbury? A newly discovered text in London, British Library, Cotton Vitellius A.xii

It's an essay investigating a text on the names of the winds in ms London, British Library, Cotton Vitellius A.xii (s. xi), where both Latin and vernacular names are given. The text may ultimately derive from Einhard's Life of Charlemagne (ch. 29), but it appears as a self-contained text in the form of a Class Glossary. Although inserted in a manuscript copied in England at Salisbury, the vernacular words of the text are not in Old English. The essay makes a case for a possible connection with Flanders, with the text being one of the very rare surviving specimen of the Old Low Franconian language.

The study of archival collections from medieval religious orders has made it possible to locate a second fragment of a medieval Spanish Bible, from the Hieronymian monastery of Santa Maria de la Sisla (Toledo). It is a bifolia from the book of Psalms that belonged to the same codex as the recently identified Ezekiel fragment (=S1). In this article the finding is reported, the liber tradens is described, specifying its meaning and value to ensure monastery rents, the fragments that it transmits are given: part of a bifolia in parchment of the s. The library of the Societat Castellonenca de Cultura (Castello de la Plana) keeps a Catalan manuscript on menescalia (veterinary medicine) virtually unknown to the specialists. Here we provide a diplomatic description, a presentation of its content, and particularly a first linguistic analysis. Our study allows us to locate its elaboration in the mid-14th century within the area of Morella, and to attribute it to a paraire or to a merchant. The manuscript is currently in the process of being edited.

This is a transcription of the beginning of Walter Burley’s (c. 1275–after 1344) commentary on Aristotle’s Politics (book one, tractate one, chapter one). The transcription reproduces the text of Vatican, MS Borgh. 129, fol. 1r–148v (here fol. 2rb–6va), which has been accessed in a high quality digital reproduction in colour. The commentary has been dated between 1338/39 and 1342. The transcription includes two apparatuses. The first of them is dedicated to references, mainly to Aristotle’s Politics.
